Martin Hansson documentary Rättskiparen
Wonderful Martin Hansson documentary called Rättskiparen about the Swedish top football referee. A Swedish documentary of half an hour which you should see as a football match official. In the summer break tv section I’ll be linking to interesting refereeing documentaries. Suggestions are welcome. So how this story goes? A description of The Documentary Network: “Top football referee Martin Hansson had a successful journey towards his vision in life, the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa. Then one dark night in Paris on November 18th, 2009, all hell broke loose…” Check out his dramatic road to the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. The Referee | Rättskiparen [2010] from…

Can you make a joke as referee?
Can you make a joke as referee? This post talks player management and communication with football players. Check out the video I made about the subject about a situation with Serdar Gözübüyük who asks player Bart Vriends what the capital city of San Marino is. The referee has seen a video of Vriends naming all the capital cities of foreign countries and thought it would be a good idea to bring up a question for the player during the game. The video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KLHNP4Mc5kY I’m working on a series of video’s and try to find a good way to make them better / more interesting. Please share your comments – especcially…

12 players sent off in Argentinian 3rd league match
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_ZQnE2jEU_c Another headline that triggered me in a negative way: 12 players sent off in Argentinian 3rd league match. That’s not how football should be. Deportivo Roca’s played Cipolletti and a player was fouled. The referee gave a yellow card for the offence, but the ‘victim’ got mad and got sent off. The offender kept protesting and receives his second yellow. Okay, two reds let’s continue now, you might think. Then problems started when the one red-carded player tries to chase the other before he went to the dressing room. A big brawl involving players, substitutes and riot police started. According to Argentine media, referee Facundo Espinosa told them that…

Referee Ice Bucket Challenge
Referees are humans too right? They also take part in the social hype: check out video’s of the Referee Ice Bucket Challenge. For who doesn’t know what this challenge is, Wikpedia helps out: It is an “activity involving dumping a bucket of ice water on one’s head to promote awareness of the disease amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and encourage donations to research.” Go to donation form. The first video comes from Björn Kuipers. He was nominated by the players of Ajax, the team that nominated both the opponent PSV and the referee of this weekend’s clash between the Dutch top teams. In the video Kuipers wonders (in Dutch) if it…

Spanish referees ready for new season
The Spanish referees are ready for the new season. They trained in Santander with the referee organisation Comité Técnico de Árbitros (CTA). During the four day meeting they got sessions about duelling between players with a focus on the use of the hands. The referees also got a speech from Doctor Antonio Escribano about nutrition for top football referees. I don’t speak Spanish, but the video below is worth watching. It gives a nice impression of the training days of the Spanish top referees.

Scotland’s top referees take final step
Scotland’s top referees did their first pre-season fitness test last weekend. A big moment for the the refs at Stirling University. The official kit was presented, the season is going to start soon. But how do Scotland’s top referees prepare for a new season? Referee boss John Fleming and referees Bobby Madden and Nick Walsh tell you how they’ll become ready for the 2014/2015 season. John Fleming, Head of Referee Operations at the Scottish FA: “They are training right through. There’s no such thing as a rest period now. They’re also involved in a 170 friendlies today.” The young Nick Walsh adds: “This test day is the final step. We…

El Shaarawy versus referee
El Shaarawy versus referee: a wonderful video of the AC Milan player. The assistant referee is blocking him from taking a corner kick, so he decides to pass the ball through the AR’s legs. Football humour, I love it 🙂 The video was re-uploaded this weekend on YouTube. I’m very happy it was, because I missed this in March: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8kngPNnOA6A Also this weekend: a strange Laws Of the Game Question on my Facebook page. “In the 85th minute a cargo ship enters the pitch. The referee stops play and gives the captain a red card. Is he correct?” Check the photo on my Facebook page.
