The back-pass rule: what would you decide?

    9 April, 2014 / 6 Comments

The back-pass rule in football is sometimes still very difficult for players and even referees. The Laws of the Game say: “An indirect free kick is awarded to the opposing team if a goalkeeper, inside his own penalty area, commits any of the following four offences: (…) 3. touches the ball with his hands after it has been deliberately kicked to him by a team-mate.” But it’s up to the referee to decide wether it is a deliberate back-pass. This video below (from 5:50 minutes) shows a player who touches the ball before the goalie picks it up. It’s a u21 match between Emmen and Dalen. In a Dutch group…

Outfit of goalkeeper: suit and shirt

    15 July, 2013 / 5 Comments

One of my readers posted the photo below on the Dutch Referee Blogs Facebook timeline. outfit of goalkeeper, good topic. Thanks for the suggestion about. It shows a goalkeeper appearing in a suit – can’t see his tie – on the goalline. It’s during a gaelic football game. But would you allow him to play during a normal football game? What is the basic equipment of player on a football pitch? The basic compulsory equipment of a player comprises the following separate items: a jersey or shirt with sleeves shorts – if undershorts or tights are worn, they must be of the same main colour as the shorts stockings shinguards…

Change decision: Irmatov gives penalty … oh no, a goal

    23 June, 2013 / 5 Comments

Ravshan Irmatov whistled for a foul in the Confederations Cup match between Italy and Brazil and awarded a penalty. Then he realised that another Italian player scored a goal immediately after he whistled. He choose to change decision and awards the goal. Is that a correct call by the referee? Below an explanation based on the Laws of the Game, but first the video from that match. “He has admitted he made a mistake,” said FIFA spokesman Pekka Odriozola. Below there’s an explanation why it was a mistake, so you could learn from that. A short description of the situation: There’s a corner kick for Italy and players are duelling…

Answer: 46 is max number of cards before abandoning game

    11 June, 2013 / 7 Comments

Here’s the answer of the question: How many cards can a referee give to active players during a competition match on highest amateur level before he needs to abandon the match? The options were, as posted in my previous blog post about the Dutch Laws of the Game Champions 2013 won by Utrecht. A. Max. 39 B. Max. 40 C. Max. 46 D. Max. 47 The correct answer is C. The explanation. I got questions about the number of substitutes. That is three. A referee could book all players from both teams: 2 x 11 = 22 yellows. Then the coaches could use substitues and all substitues could get booked…

    9 June, 2013 / 15 Comments

Referees from Utrecht are the Dutch Laws of the Game Champions 2013. The team won for the 4th time in a row the national championship for football rules specialists. Marco Ritmeester from Utrecht was the individual champion with 124 points out of a possible 140. The referees from Utrecht only won by 7 points from De Langstraat after a full day (10am untill 5pm) of questions about the football rules. Four reasons for referee to stop play for injury

    3 June, 2013 / 9 Comments

In the match between Bristol and Arsenal in the highest league of women’s football in England the referee gave a penalty kick for a handball. But did he have to? Below four reasons for a referee to stop play for injury. First a short description of the situation. A Bristol player shoots on goal and the Arsenal goalie could only tip it onto the bar. The ball lands in the goal area and both the goalie and (another) attacker are going for the ball. Then the view from the video camera is blocked by a few players, so we can’t see if someone made on offence there. The result of…

    Streaking outside agent: goal cancelled

    27 May, 2013 / 3 Comments

An almost naked football supporter, a so-called streaking outside agent, enters field of play during an attack from HJK Helsinki in Finnish Veikausliiga. He runs through the penalty area and distracts the players. When the streaker is still in the penalty area, one of the players from HJK Helsinki scores against RoPS. The referee initially pointed with his hand to the centre mark, a sign that he counts the goal. HJK players were cheering and after about 5 seconds the referee puts his hands to his ears and there might be a call from his assistant referee. Another twenty seconds pass by before the streaking supporter gets caught by one…
